Happy & Successful Seed Exchange

Author: Akamai Mom Felicia | Filed under: Events

The Seed exchange in Kapaa was well attended and we found new homes for all our many plant starts we brought. Taro, sweet potato, comfrey, garlic chives, lilikoi, avocados, cotton, and lemon grass. Yeah! There was so much quality free plants and seeds. If you missed this one, catch the next one. We’ll keep you posted. Dr. Hector Valenzuela from University of Hawaii made a meaningful presentation on the GMO industry followed by his recommendations for a much stronger, healthier pathway of saving seeds designed by nature.

Saving and trading seeds is so cool! Having food that is original rather then genetically modified. We are doing the same thing here on the mainland in the Inland Northwest, Washington State. Growing “heirloom” tomatoes and other vegetables. Good luck on all your growing and can someone tell me what “lilikoi” is?? I wonder if it is a fruit, herb, root or green leafy plant?
    I love your garden!

Lilikoi is passion fruit. There are a number of types. It grows on a rather aggressive vine. We mostly have a type that has a firm and waxy rind. It is a beautiful yellow when ripe with a tart orange filling. It compliments a sweet papaya in an amazing way. After school, I’ll try and take a picture and post it. There is also a sweeter, Jamaican lilikoi that is orange and soft on the outside with a purple interior.

Thanks Akamai Mom Felicia! I love papaya but I have never heard of these different varieties. Thanks for the info and if you can post a photo that would be great!
Have a wonderful day in your beautiful land and backyard ~ Patti
